How people work.

Funded by and run for Steelcase Inc., the knowledge workplace project is a multi-year effort delivering innovation in information appliances and systems for the office and beyond.

New digital technologies are beginning to cause a vast increase in the capacity to generate, distribute and share information. In its current guise, the ubiquitous PC represents only a narrow window into the networked world. It tends to under-utilize human capacities to enjoy working and living in a real physical space, and reduces our ability to use pictures and physical relationships to interpret and analyse information.

As technologies for image capture, storage and display get cheaper, and as the internet drives up the availability of networking languages and tools, it becomes possible to embed devices into the workplace, and to use web-oriented tools to build and navigate through knowledge networks.

The knowledge workplace project is concerned with designing and developing a series of such devices in a way that they can be readily deployed and used within the work environment. It has already resulted in the Wizard web signs range of appliance products for Steelcase, with other innovative appliances under development.
