What makes a good Information Appliance?

Good information appliances – and good ordinary appliances for that matter – share a set of characteristics we call applianceness. Applianceness is what makes good appliances a pleasure to use. It's what makes them useful. And it's what makes them successful products. Here are four key elements of applianceness:
Digital printer - an example of the applianceness characteristic of <working together>.

Everyday things
Successful appliances become everyday things. Not only are they easy to use, it's also obvious what you'd use them for, and why they exist.

Focused function
Successful appliances do one thing well. They have a single consistent function, which can be used for a wide variety of purposes. Think of a telephone.

Working together
Successful appliances work with others as peers. All good tools do the same. Think of a knife and fork, or a digital camera and a printer.

Task closure
Successful appliances reward their users with the sense of job done.

Of course, these things are interrelated. Task closure is a big part of what makes an appliance an everyday thing. Working together is what frees appliances from having to be multi-function. And so on.
